ABBOTS LANGLEY GARDENING SOCIETY – AUTUMN
SHOW 2009
As usual the second Saturday in September the weather is always
sunny and the sunshine flowed also into the Henderson Hall in Abbots
Langley where the Abbots Langley Gardening Society held their Annual
Show.
This year the Secretary Mrs Jane Lay said “this has been
the best show the Society had held for many years with an increase
of entries by 50. The committee were panicking over the fact that
they may run out of tables to show all the exhibits on but luckily
an extra 5 tables were found. The day ran very smoothly as the members
started to bring in their exhibits at 7.30am and after staging had
finished the 5 judges proceeded with their difficult jobs to find
the winners. At 2.30 the exhibitors and public were allowed in and
we had record numbers who came to visit our show”
The Chairman of the Parish Council, Councillor David Major was
able to present the trophies to new and familiar members who entered
this year. Jane and Leon again produced their beautiful dahlias
in abundance and won the Best in Class as well as the point’s
cup, as well as Keith Gissing, and new entrant Brenda Verge won
the same in their class with their lovely flowers. Roger Silvester
came up trumps again with his vegetables as well as John Beaumont
with his excellent collection of four different vegetables, which
is a very difficult class to enter. It was lovely to see Doreen
Higgs winning again with her superb cooking exhibits and a big surprise
that one of the gentlemen who had entered this year, John Tapster,
won with his very tasty Christmas chutney. Many of the ladies were
asking for his recipe. Lynda Sutherland showed what skill she has
with her camera and won two cups, and Carol Higgs also showed her
skill by entering her delightful flower arrangements as well as
her roses. Jo Bromwich made an outstanding quilt in orange colours
which was shown off by hanging it on the wall and gained Jo a Best
in Class. Jane and Leon Lay with 102 points won the Challenge Plate
awarded to the family who overall gained the most number of points
in the show.
The Secretary said how pleased she was to see that two children
had entered this year and hoped that more children would be encouraged
to enter in future. The only blip on the whole day was that there
were no wine classes entered but this could be because it was very
difficult for people to buy the wine yeasts necessary to make the
wine. We also said goodbye and thank you to one of our faithful
Judges, Clare Gell who had been judging for us for 19 years who
had decided to move to Cyprus.
